Book Review: 500 of the Most Witty, Acerbic and Erudite Things about Ever Said about Politics, by Th

“Followers of British politics will recognize the compiler of this collection to be the former headman at Politico’s. If one enjoys witty sayings about politics, this is a book to have. Moreover, its size permits one to carry it in a coat pocket for ready reference or light reading on a train or bus. Although, the compiler is British and many of the quotations are about British politics, there are also many witty comments about the politics of other nations, especially the U.S. Depending on one’s sense of humor, several of the quotations are classics. For examples: “Everyone in active politics has to be conscious of their sell-by date.” Peter Mandelson. “Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his friends for his life.” Jeremy Thorpe on Harold Macmillan. [Of course, Thorpe later had problems with his friends, and not political ones, let alone Cabinet Members!] “There is nothing so improves the mood of the party as the imminent execution of a senior colleague.” Alan Clark, pp. 107-108. Those addicted to political trivia will want this slim book to baffle their friends and appear to be more politically astute than they actually are. Others will want it for the many laughs it will generate.”
