Carl Richards

Carl created The Sketch Guy Column in the New York Times from the hills in Utah using card stock and a Sharpie. It ran every week for a decade.

If that sounds impossible, keep in mind that Carl got his first job in the investment industry when he applied to be a security guard because he thought the ad said “security” when it said “securities”.

From there, Carl went on to become a Certified Financial Planner™, build and sell a highly successful investment business, and speak at every significant investment and financial planning event worldwide, including events in Australia, China, South Africa, and every major economic center in the UK and Europe.

Carl has lectured widely at universities worldwide, including guest lectures at Stanford, Washington University, Brigham Young, and the University of Utah.

Carl’s books, The Behavior Gap and The One-Page Financial Plan were both best sellers and have been translated into over ten languages.

His podcast Behavior Gap Radio is released every weekday, closing in on 1,200 episodes.

Carl’s current projects focus on how we can more fully align our use of capital with what is truly important to us. This includes his podcast, 50 Fires with executive producers Chip and Joanna Gaines, in which Carl explores money and meaning with guests like Chip Gaines, Pete Holmes, Morgan and Gretchen Housel, David Whyte, Krista Tippett, and his favorite guest, his wife, Cori.

His new book will be out in the Fall of 2025, and he is not telling anyone the title yet. It’s a collection of essays and sketches that will hopefully help us avoid spending our entire lives climbing a ladder of perceived success only to find that it is leaning against the wrong wall.

Carl created The Society of Advice, where he hosts online gatherings and retreats in Park City, Utah, for people who care deeply about the craft of advice.

Carl is a Wilderness First Responder and spends as much time as possible navigating risky terrain on high mountain ridges in Utah.

Carl has been married to Cori for 30 years, and together, they have four kids whom he considers his best friends.
